4to. 3-pages, a manuscript poem of 88 long lines, signed at the end “Cambridge, May 11th 1831 / Joseph Story” [not in Story’s hand, but a contemporary fair copy]. A poignant lament on the death of Story’s 9-year old daughter Louisa (1821-1831), one of a number of early deaths for Story’s loved ones; his first wife died shortly after their 1805 marriage, two months after the death of his father, and five of his seven children did not make it to adulthood. This poem is printed in full in The Life and Letters of Joseph Story (Boston, 1851; pp. 57-59), edited by his son William Wetmore Story. Old folds (several small breaks). Very good. Item #71016
