Replying to a letter from Parker Cleaveland with a promise to send some mineralogical specimens that he has collected for Parker’s inspection, as recorded in a retained copy autograph of an autograph letter, unsigned (unrelated signed note from Read laid in), Sept. 15, 1817, to Cleaveland at Bowdoin College.
Folio bifolium. 3-pages, verso of integral leaf with Read’s docketing “Copy / Parker Cleaveland / Bowdoin College / Sept. 15, 1817.” A detailed account of a half dozen specimens, with places of discovery, the people involved, etc., “some of the specimens are the best I have ever seen.” From his works, Cleaveland (1780-1858; American geologist and mineralogist, Bowdoin College professor, 1805-1858), earned the title “Father of American Mineralogy.” Read closes this letter “Be assured nothing will give me greater pleasure than to be in any degree instrumental in any degree of furnishing you with the means promoting the cause of that science, of which in our country, you may be justly considered the Founder.” Lower blank portion of integral leaf neatly torn away, old fold lines, but very good.
