Illustrated from wood engravings and line drawings, many steel-engraved portraits. Cover title: History of Albany and Schenectady Counties, 1609-1986. Professor James Hall’s copy, with his ownership blindstamp on the title page; Hall (1811-1898) was one of the leaders of the geological survey of New York in the 1830s and 1840s, became state paleontologist in 1841, built a geological study center in Albany, became director of the New York Museum of Natural History in 1866 and state geologist in 1893, among many other life achievements. Publisher’s black half-morocco and gilt-stamped brown cloth, a.e.g. Some foxing to front endpaper and the plates, several old tidelines in upper margins, but a very good copy of a book usually found in deteriorating condition or rebound, with a nice provenance.
