[Mexico: 1796]. Large broadside, 58 x 41 cm., printed in two columns, on two halves (as issued), joined horizontally across the bottom and top margins of the halves. Old fold lines, some pencil underlining to text, else a nice example. A large display type for the head ("Miguel la Grua Talamanca"), signed in type "Marques de Branciforte" at the bottom. Text of the proclamation begins: "Por quanto el Rey nuestro senor ( Dios le guarde) se ha dignado declarar la Guerra contra el de Inglaterra...." A decree transmitting to Mexicans the royal order of 7 October 1796 declaring war against the King of England and describing the various acts of bad faith of England toward Spain in the war with France: occupation of Corsica, the treaty of 19 November 1794 with the United States, confiscation of Spanish naval property, contraband in South America, threats against Spanish possessions in the Antilles, piracy and insults to Spanish sovereignty, and the detention of the Spanish ambassador in London.
