Denying that he was ever Governor of Virginia and suggesting confusion with Joseph Johnson, “who was not a relative of mine, but a southern man by birth, was governor from Jan 1852 to January 1856. He lived in Harrison County, which is now part of West Virginia,” in an autograph letter, signed by Johnson March 23, 1873 on Senate Chamber stationery, to a Mr. H. Storm.
