Three generations of Elizabeths in a single family, as recorded in a group of manuscripts described below. Elizabeth Jeffry Read (1772-1855), the middle Elizabeth, was the wife of Massachusetts Congressman Nathan Read; her mother Elizabeth Bowditch Jeffry (1735-1797) was the daughter of Salem shipbuilder William Bowditch and the widow of Salem businessman William Jeffry (1737-1772); and her daughter Elizabeth H. Read (1793-1873).
A few of the manuscripts show some storage wear and soiling, but a very good lot. Item #70206
(1) READ, Elizabeth Jeffry (1772-1855). Keeping her husband apprised of their children’s activities, her socializing, local gossip, weather, etc., in a series of autograph letters, signed by her, Jan. 4, 1801 – Feb. 13, 1803, from Salem and Danvers, to Nathan Read while serving in Congress in Washington, D.C. 4to. 4-pages total, approximately 550 words total, in part: “Mary is much pleased with her Alphabet & says she will learn it very soon … the election is the chief subject discussed, the opinions are various but in general they think as you do that Burr will be the least evil … now waiting with impatience to hear the result of the election. I hope it will be more favourable than is apprehended … [the children] have learnt to play scratch-candle & quite a new dialect. I try to correct their bad habits but want you assistance to exterminate them.” Accompanied by nine addressed cover sheets. Also accompanied by a manuscript, Dec. 5, 1780, listing of 13 bonds worth a total of 661 pounds that Joseph Bowditch “gave to his Grand Daughter Elizabeth Jeffry Junr. in the Possession of Elizabeth Jeffry, Guardian to the said Elizabeth, Junr.,” and by a 19th century manuscript transcription of the bequest and a 1790 manuscript receipt from Gilbert Chadwich for a purchase of Beef, Suet, & Tongue. (7 items) (2) JEFFRY, Elizabeth Bowditch (1735-1797). Granting guardianship of “Elizabeth Jeffrey a minor aged eight years Daughter of Mr. William Jeffry Late of Salem aforesaid merchant deceased” to Mrs. Elizabeth Jeffry, widow, a partially printed Essex document, completed in manuscript and signed by Judge B. Greenleaf, Dec. 5, 1780, with seal. Folio. One page, one fold with a split into text. Accompanied by three receipts to Jeffry, one signed by Joseph Bowditch, leaving her a Bible & a Psalm Book, gold buttons, and silver buckles and two signed by Jeffry on receiving payments from son-in-law Nathan Read in 1794 and 1796. Also accompanied by a receipt signed by E.A. Holyoke for medicines and medical visits by Mrs. Elizabeth Jeffry, 1773-1777. (4 items) (3) READ, Elizabeth H. (1793-1873, apparently a life-long resident of Belfast). Album of pressed leaves and flowers, inscribed on the front endpaper “Elizabeth H. Read / from her mother / Elizabeth J. Read.” Oblong 4to. Five leaves with pressed flowers. Original gilt and blue patterned boards (spine partly eroded). Multi-color and gilt decorated label on upper cover, with Read’s ownership signature. Accompanied by a receipt for the youngest Elizabeth’s “instructing” for two years ($26.15), signed by the instructor, Elizabeth’s 1807 signed 14-line manuscript poem “To Gratitude,” an 1811 signed two-page letter to “My dear pupils” (4to, approximately 450 words), and an 1808 two-page letter from a former teacher that includes a long postscript to Mrs. Read (4to, approximately 450 words).
