Settling suits related to the initial construction of the railroad that would run from Columbus, Ohio, into Indiana, chartered by Ohio in 1849, as recorded in three manuscript Madison, Ohio, documents, 1851-1853
Folio. 18 total pages, approximately 3500 words on blue paper, the two longer documents tied in the top margin. Despite ongoing court cases, revolving around promoter’s altering proposed routes through local communities depending on how many subscriptions for stock could be sold, and other issues, construction began in 1852 and the first stretch, Columbus to Plain City, Ohio, opened in 1853, further extensions, to Urbana, then Piqua, occurred in 1854, and the route, to Union City, Indiana, was finally finished in 1859. Financial problems during the Civil War led to its reorganization, and after several mergers, it became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1921. One document is signed by attorney for two sides in a dispute, another has noted in manuscript “Copied for Compts [complainant ?].” Old fold lines, but very good. For the three documents, Item #70183
