Satisfying the curiosity of an unnamed correspondent as to the career of John Dawson in Charleston, in an autograph letter, signed by Porcher, from Charleston, August 15, 1873, to an unnamed correspondent
4to. Two pages, approximately 300 words, in part: “The chief magistrate of this city until about 1836 was called the Intendant … [in] 1806 John Dawson was elected [warden] from the thirteenth ward … the same year he was elected Intendant [serving until 1809] … In 1811 he became cashier of the State Bank [long passage about the oddities of banks in Charleston] … Dawson succeeded Felix Manly as cashier and I suspect was himself succeeded by Samuel Wragg. … I may well be wedded to the college. It is now about my only life. I am showing that I am not too old for the place, having within a few years succeeded in introducing French and Spanish into my course, and I trust it will not be long before I shall introduce the Italian.” Old fold lines, but very good.
