New England Loyal Publication Society [caption title, followed by “The True Democracy. / Speech of Edwards Pierrepont. / McClellan’s Career Reviewed – Some New Facts.,” sub-headline above first column of text].

Boston, (MA): The society, November 7, 1864. Printed broadside, 24 ¼ x 20 ¾ inches, the text printed in seven columns separated by narrow rules, at head of text “[No. 239]”. Prints a long, passionate speech by Pierrepont (1817-1892; U.S. Attorney General, 1875-1876, other political offices; “served as Abraham Lincoln’s personal advisor before and after Lincoln was elected president” – Wikipedia), given at Cooper Union November 1, 1864, opposing the election of George McClellan for President. “It is not a contest between Lincoln and McClellan. It is a conflict between two great contending principles – between free and despotic government; and clearly presents the question, whether the prosperity, the happiness, and the greatness of our country shall be preserved or forever destroyed.” OCLC locates at least two copies of this broadside (American Antiquarian Society, Stanford) and at least three pamphlet printings of the speech. Old fold lines, with some wear and darkening along central vertical fold. Still a good copy of this printing of Pierrepont’s important speech. Item #69242
