The Bail Bond of Mr. Jefferson Davis,/ Late President of the Confederate States, / [cut of a portrait of Davis, 2 ½ x 2 5/8 inches] / With All the Original Signatures Thereto [caption title, above three paragraphs of text in the hand of W.H. Barry as clerk].

Richmond, VA: James G. Watkins [Lith of Ch. I. Ludwig, Richmond], c1895. Broadside facsimile, 17 x 10 1/8 inches, of Davis’s April, 1867 bail bond, 20 guarantors (among them Horace Greeley, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Gerit Smith) pledging $5000 each, guaranteeing his presence for trial in Richmond, then following November; facsimile signatures of Davis, the clerk, and the 20 guarantors below the text. Davis remained under indictment for treason until President Johnson’s Christmas, 1868 general pardon and his case never went to trial. OCLC locates two copies (Library of Virginia, Connecticut State Library). Some spotting, old fold lines, but very good (accompanied by the original printed mailing envelope for the broadside, very worn). Item #69135
