SETTLING AN ACCOUNT, in an autograph note, signed by Conner (as “Porter & Conner”) on his business letterhead, Nov. 11, 1870, to “Simons & Simons.”
8vo. One-page, approximately 25 words, in part: “Make up your statement & we will settle for your men.” Conner began the war as a captain in the Hampton Legion, then commanded the 22nd NC Infantry from Seven Pines through the Battle of the Wilderness, before taking command of Kershaw’s Brigade; he was seriously wounded at Cedar Creek, necessitating a leg amputation. Following the war, Conner resumed his law practice and served as South Carolina Attorney General, 1876-1877. Published posthumously in 1933, his book Letters of General James Conner, C.S.A. is rare and much sought. Verso with ink calculations, else very good. Item #68503
