Charleston, (SC): Evans & Cogswell, Printers, 18[61-63]. Partially printed document, 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, a cut, 1 ¼ x 1 inch, of the Palmetto tree seal at the top, this copy unused. The enlistee promised to “serve [the state] … against all its enemies or opposers whomsoever … and will obey the orders of the Governor of the State of South Carolina”; two further passages provide for certification from an “Examining Surgeon” and a “Recruiting Officer,” and another partially printed form verso [provides for docketing. This form was used in South Carolina early in the war until changes were made to provide for enlistment directly into the Confederate army. Old fold lines (a little insect damage in margin).
