Charleston, (SC): Evans & Cogswell, Printers, 18[61]. Partially printed document, 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, this copy completed in manuscript and signed by Goetz April 16, 1861. The enlistee promised to “serve [the state] … against all its enemies or opposers whomsoever … and will obey the orders of the President of the Confederate States” for a period of three years; two further passages provide for certification from an “Examining Surgeon” [signed here by “Jno. B. Holmes”] and a “Recruiting Officer” [faded signature], and another partially printed form verso provides for docketing. Goetz, a 24-year old tailor born in Germany, was sworn in at Castle Pinckney, the Charleston Harbor fortified island.
