DEFENCE OF CYRUS BARTON, AGAINST THE ATTACKS OF HON. ISAAC HILL UPON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PATRIOT AND STATE GAZETTE

[Conord, NH]? 1840. First edition. 22 cm. 16 pp. Sewn, untrimmed, margins a little frayed, previous owner's signature on title page. Sheets very spotted and somewhat soiled. Good, only, but sound. At head of title: "[New-Hampshire Patriot, Extra - Sept. 7, 1840.]" Hill had made the Patriot into one of the most influential papers in New England before accepting an appointment as second comptroller of the Treasury in 1830 and transferring his interest to Barton. The dispute here involves lingering questions over that transfer; Hill has begun publication of a rival paper in an effort to bring pressure on Barton. As U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, and later Governor, Hill was one of the most powerful politicians of the Jackson era. Item #68417
