Fort was born in Warrenton, Georgia, graduated from the Philadelphia Medical College, and commenced practice in 1810. He was a captain of a volunteer company in the War of 1812, and was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives 1818-1826. He was elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the 20th United States Congress and served from March 4, 1827 to March 3, 1829. He resumed the practice of medicine in Milledgeville, Georgia. He was president of the State Bank of Georgia in 1832 and remained in that position until his death in Milledgeville in 1859. Amateur pencil drawing of him on flyleaf.
