Ownership signature of [Israel] Balch dated August 29, 1823, on front endpaper. Balch's first name has been rubbed out leaving a hole in paper. An otherwise very good copy. Dr. Israel Balch (1788-1858) graduated from Dartmouth and moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts to study with Dr. French, and eventually established his own practice there. "He had the largest medical library in Amesbury or vicinity. He was a very successful practitioner of medicine and surgery.... Many young men sought his office for instruction in medicine and surgery, navigation and higher mathematics."
