Dedham, MA: 1924-1926. Manuscript game book, describing hunts and fishing trips and recording game birds and others killed and fish caught, primarily in eastern Massachusetts, especially around Marshfield, the fishing in New Brunswick, Canada. Folio. Eleven pages of text, for the hunting trips, each with a facing page holding a total of 12 captioned photographs (4 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches) picturing Crane in hunting garb with his dog or kills, mounted feathers from Crane’s kills, a hunting license for 1924, and other ephemera, approximately 2000 words; at the rear, a separate section for Fishing Record for 1924, four pages for text, recording a August-September, 1924 trip to New Brunswick, fishing the headwaters of the Tobique-Mirramachee [sic: Miramichi] Rivers and nearby lakes [Trousers], each page with facing illustrations as with the hunting section, five captioned photographs, a 1924 New Brunswick fishing license, and a pencil tracing for a large Brook Trout on a folding brown paper bag, approximately 600 words. Crane’s hunting trips were primarily for shore birds (rail, snipe, plover, “grass birds,” etc., though a black duck also appears; he also shot a kingfisher, a least bittern, a heron, and “innumerable starlings”); 190 trout and ten salmon were caught on the fishing trip. Contemporary half-leather and cloth ledger book (joints worn through, corners bumped), the manuscript quite legible. Item #67824
