Large folio sheet, 12 ½ x 15 ½ inches, folded. Madison County lies just south of Lexington. Toulmin, a native of England, emigrated to the United States as a young man and a dissenting Unitarian minister, and, helped by Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, was appointed to the Transylvania post; Toulmin published A Description of Kentucky in 1792, endorsed the Kentucky Resolutions as Secretary of State, and, after moving to the Mississippi Territory, was instrumental in establishing the legal code for Alabama, helping to write the state’s first constitution.
