ca. 1898. Single sheet, 30 x 22.5 cm. Lyrics only, in ink. Old fold lines, multiple tears, repairs, a 3 x 4 in.section chipped away, with lyric re-written at a later date [and in a different hand?]. Stained. "4690 Geo W. Monroe," penciled at top [a previous owner and perhaps the transcriber?]. This version is slightly different from the lyrics attributed to Andrew B. Sterling (1874-1955), who was perhaps one of the greatest American popular song writers of the period, and Harry Von Tilzer (1872-1946), who wrote the music. The song was a big hit in 1898. Its success prompted Maurice Shapiro of Shapiro-Bernstein Music Publishers to make Von Tilzer a partner, and the firm was renamed 'Shapiro, Bernstein and Von Tilzer'. Harry then wrote his next big hit in 1900, 'A Bird In A Gilded Cage'." Item #67628
