Verifying service on Lake Erie in the War of 1812, in a clerical manuscript letter, “Navy Department, January 13th, 1831,” signed by Branch as Secretary of the Navy, to George Grady, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in part: “I send you a certificate [not present here] from the Fourth Auditor of the Treasury shewing that you were in the engagement of the 10th of September, 1813 on Lake Erie.” On that day, Oliver Hazard Perry and his fleet defeated the British flotilla, ensuring American control of the lake throughout the war.
