The invoice, dated Linwood, Cherokee Co., Texas, 7 March 1854, records the number of crossing made by Almanzon Huston with "a four horse stage" over the Angelina Turnpike between January 2, 1852 and February 25, 1854. These trips, a total of 604 over the two years, resulted in a bill of $420. Most of the trips were charged a the rate of 60 cents. Signed by Solomon Wolfe, and by Thomas Hart, gate keeper. Old fold lines, splitting across one fold, an ink smudge or two, but all legible. Item #67368

The town of Linwood was located near the banks of the Angelina River in 1851, when the post office originally located at Lockranzie was moved there. It was promoted as a port, but river traffic was sparse. The town did develop into a commercial center, however, with merchants from Nacogdoches establishing businesses there. Almanzon Huston (1799-1861), who had been Quartermaster General of the Texas army during the Texas Revolution, operated a stage line and mail route from San Augustine through Nacogdoches to Huntsville until his death in 1861. Solomon Wolfe constructed a bridge across the Angelina River in about 1860. [see: The Handbook of Texas online, and "Cherokee County History," by the Cherokee Co. Hist. Commission (2001), p.350].
