Wirt (1772-1834) served as prosecutor in the 1807 treason case against Aaron Burr and as Attorney General of the United States, 1817-1829. Inscribed in volume one by the author in 1863 to Rev. Arthur Cleveland Coxe. Howes K-87 ("aa"). Sabin 37414. BAL 11056. Larned 1707: "Valuable for history of the practice of law rather than statesmanship. Concerns early Virginia politics, the cabinets of Monroe, Adams, and Jackson, but especially the bar of the Supreme Court from 1814 to 1834 ... especially full on the trial of Aaron Burr." Rubbed on edges and joints, else very good copy in a full morocco presentation binding, spine gilt with titles and gilt decorations between raised bands, all edges gilt, lower outer corners of four leaves in volume two rather amateurishly repaired, not affecting text. Ex libris Mark Skinner Library Manchester Vermont. Markings consist of bookplate on front pastedown, remnants of library pocket on rear pastedown and a few blindstamps. Item #67314
