PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT BETWEEN WILLIAM V. HEFLEY AND JOHN M. HEFLEY, OF THE COUNTY OF MILLAM, STATE OF TEXAS, FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAISING, TRADING, BUYING AND SELLING HORSES, DATED FEBRUARY 20, 1870

Single sheet of lined paper, 30 x 20 cm., [2] pp. manuscript agreement, approx. 360 words. Signed by both Wm. V. Hefley and J.M. Hefley, and attested to by J.E. Marsh. Docketed on the second page. Old fold lines, text appears to be in two different hands (one clerical?). William Hefley agrees to furnish the co-partnership with the entire stock of horses valued at $2000, purchased from John W. Brooks. "In lieu of the business qualifications of the party of the second part," John Hefley agrees to exert his best energies "to take care of said horses and use every diligence to promote the interest of said co-partnership." William Vance Hefley (1820-1896) moved to Texas in 1854, settling in Cameron, Milam County. He was a farmer and family man, raising several children, including John M. Hefley (1845-1903). The younger Hefley went into the mercantile business in the town of Cameron, and later helped found and become president of the First National Bank of Cameron, as well as the Trinity, Cameron & Western Railroad Company.
