[Bound with his:] Anecdotes Secretes sur le 18 Fructidor, et Nouveaux memoires des Deportes a la Guiane, ecrits par eux-memes, et faisant suite, au Journal de Ramel. Paris: Chez Giguet, 1799. First edition. 8vo. 2 volumes: 159; viii, 252, (2, ad leaf for publications from Chez Giguet) pp. Sabin 67627 and 67625. Ramel (1768-1815), who had risen through the ranks of the French army to become Guard of the Legislature, gives his account, of the coup attempt of 18 Fructidor (1797), his arrest and exile to the penal colony in Guiana, conditions while there, and his escape; Ramel eventually returned to France, rejoined the army and fought through the various Napoleonic campaigns, until his assassination in 1815 for suspected Loyalist sympathies. Contemporary mottled calf (some wear at head of spine, and along edges and corners), boards framed with an ornamental gilt rule, spine gilt with rues and ornaments, leather spine label, marbled boards. Bookplate removed from front pastedown, but still a very good copy. Item #66989
