Paris: Chez Laurent Prault, 1768. 16mo in eights. 2 volumes: (4), xii, 379; (4), 440 pp. La Bruyere (1645-1696), a French philosopher, is best known for his Caracteres, “sketches, combining literary and ethical criticism, of individuals baptized with names taken from the plays and romances of the times.” Contemporary mottled calf (rubbed), spines richly gilt with ornaments and rules, leather spine labels, marbled endpapers and mottled edges.
