a. A partial-synopsis review of some of the textbooks used in Alabama Public Schools during 1962-1964 inclusive. [Montgomery, AL]: Textbook Study Committee of the Alabama Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, October 1964. First edition (?), a reproduced typescript. 4to. 50 unnumbered leaves [printed rectos only]. Manuscript ink note at head of title: “Initial Ala. DAR study – not approved by the new admin of DAR National President – see session without change which was brought up to date by adding new reviews – the Revised edition was approved & copyrighted upon order of Natl DAR.” “This compilation of exhibits is conclusive evidence that selection of textbooks now requires the auxiliary services of an expert on subversion in addition to the knowledge of class room teachers and school administrators.” Apparently not recorded on OCLC. Stapled into blue DAR wrappers. Very good.

[Montgomery, AL]: Textbook Study Committee of the Alabama Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, 1966. First edition. 4to. 64 unnumbered leaves [printed rectos only]. Manuscript ink note at head of title, signed “M. B. Lowman”: “Collaborated with Mrs. Elizabeth McLaurine Montgomery Ala. Mrs. H. A. Alexander and I helped to write this series – made final edit prior to publication. M. G. Lowman I furnished records also.” “A majority of the states have no laws to safeguard textbooks from seditious, subversive or disloyal material.” OCLC locates one copy (Michigan). Stapled into blue DAR wrappers. Very good.

[BROADSIDE] Who Is the Liar – Butterworth or Austin Meadows / Alabama Parents and Alabama Legislature Must Decide / At Least 34 Textbooks Supporting Communism Allowed by Meadows in Alabama Schools. / [Caption title, followed by six columns of dense text, with bold headlines over a number of sections]. Signed in type at the bottom “Wally Butterworth, Educational Phonograph Records, Box 624, Wetumpka, Alabama” followed by an ad for “Complete Ala. D.A.R. Booklet of Letters Exposing Textbooks.” Wetumpka, AL: Wally Butterworth, [1965]. Printed broadside, 22 x 16 inches, employing large bold capitals for first line of title. Accuses Austin R. Meadows, Alabama Superintendent of Education, of allowing “textbooks [that] furnish Sex-stimulus for 15-18-year-olds” and “at least 34 textbooks supporting communism.” Red stamp in upper margin “For These Vile Books / Check Your School.” Apparently not recorded on OCLC. Folded, poor quality paper browned, but very good.
d. Printed broadside, 22 x 16 inches, the first two lines of the title employing larger bold type, the text first appearing in The Wetumpka Herald, Feb. 4, 1965. “The books are direct result of a rabid Socialist or a mild Communist, one John Dewey, who is called the father of Progressive Education. He was a product of the red University of Chicago … [and] rejected the old American concepts that there are fixed moral laws and eternal truths.” Red stamp in upper margin “For These Vile Books / Check Your School.” Apparently not recorded on OCLC.
