Printed handbill, 7 ½ x 4 3/8 inches, in which Carpenter announces his command of a brigade composed of the 15th U.S. Infantry, the 3rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry, and the 8th U.S. Cavalry, departing Huntsville for Savannah on November 7, for a sea voyage to Nuevitas, Cuba, with other instructions concerning travel and supply. Although Military action ended in August, 1898, formal peace wasn’t established until December; upon arrival in Cuba, Carpenter, a hero of the American Civil War and a Medal of Honor winner for actions against Native Americans in the West, became the first military governor of Puerto Principe.
