THE LANTHORN BOOK BEING A SMALL COLLECTION OF TALES AND VERSES READ AT THE SIGN O' THE LANTHORN 126 WILLIAM STREET NEW YORK

New York: Sign O' The Lanthorn, 126 William Street, (1898). First edition. No. 12 of 125 copies. 29 cm. unpaginated, text printed on double leaves, illustrated. Title page in red and black. Bound in quarter reverse calf (rubbed, spine ends worn) and green cloth; printed paper label laid down on front board, blue oil cloth cover with title stamped in gilt on the spine, and plain blue cloth slipcase (lightly worn). A very good, internally clean copy. This copy inscribed on the half title "To my friend H.[?] G. Brown, F[?] Hamilton King," and dated December 25, 1898. This limited edition is signed by several of the contributors, including Stephen Crane, who signed his short story "The Wise Men." Other contributors whose signatures appear include John Langdon Heaton, Irving Bacheller, Post Wheeler, Charles B. Lewis [who signs as 'M. Quad'], and Charles Kelsey Gaines. Hamilton King signed and dated his illustration for Post Wheeler's story. The only contributor who does not appear to have signed is Willis Brooks Hawkins whose entire piece is printed in script. Cover design and initial letters by Carroll J. Post, Jr. Item #66745

According to BAL II, p. 337, Stephen Crane's "The Wise Men" also appeared in a collection of his stories entitled "The Open Boat" in April of this same year. "Month of publication of the Lanthorn Book not known; Starrett-Williams state (p.40) that 'it seems likely' that the book was issued 'during November and December of 1898.' " The inscription here by King gives that credence.
