One-page, approximately 75 words, in part: I am at a loss to understand why I should be esteemed worth … if not, therefore, in error, I beg to notify you of my acceptance of the membership conferred.” After a long military career, Lazelle was in command of the 18th Infantry Regiment stationed a Fort Clark. After graduating from West Point in 1855, Lazelle served in Texas and New Mexico; captured by the Confederates at Fort Bliss in 1861, he was exchanged the following year and rose to command a cavalry brigade during the Civil War. He served in the Indian Wars following that conflict, in the Dakotas, on the 1872 and 1873 Yellowstone expeditions, and in Montana. His final service was at Fort Clark, 1889-1894.
