(1872). In two autograph letters, signed April 22 and December 26, 1872 as a U. S. Senator, to J. R. Osgood & Co., the first instructing the company to send six “marked” copies to a like number of friends (including “Mr. Stanton” and “Mr. Louis Tappan”), the second asking the company to provide written authority “for Mr. J. M. Grassie [clerk of the Senate Military Affairs Committee in the 40th Congress, 1867-1869] of this city to solicit subscriptions for the ‘Rise & Fall &c.” Both folded for mailing, but very good.
