Item #66230

Hardin R. Runnels (1820-1873) served several terms as a Texas State legislator in the 1840s and 1850s, and as lieutenant governor before defeating Sam Houston in the gubernatorial election of 1857. He served one term, and espoused Southern positions, including the threat of secession and an unsuccessful attempt to re-establish the slave trade. Runnels ran for a second term but lost to Houston in 1859. [see his brief biography in the Handbook of Texas online].
