[Newburyport, MA]: Printed at the Newburyport Herald Office, 1859. Broadside. 32 x 20 cm. Text in two columns beneath title. Two poems (called original hymns), one by Mrs. E. P. Grosvenor with first line: "Sacred to science, wisdom, truth," the other by J. G. Whittier with first line: "The South-land hath its fields of cane...." Other participants included an address by Rev. L. Withington, and expected addresses by Horace Mann, Rev. Dr. Sears, and A.W. Sprague, an introductory prayer by Rev. Dr. Dana, a concluding prayer by Rev. D. T. Fisk, and a benediction by Rev. Mr. Stone. Printed slightly cocked, on light blue paper with ornate border surrounding text. Some staining outside top border, two signatures outside bottom border one in pencil, the other in ink. First appearance of this poem by Whittier BAL 21767. Newbury High School was one of the first public schools in the United States. The poem by Grosvernor is focused on education.
