Diploma, in manuscript, 24.5 x 30 cm. Mounted, glazed & framed. Some old staining and browning. David Ely was the son of Richard Ely and Phebe Hubbard, born June 7, 1749 (probably in Connecticut) and died February 16, 1816. He married Hepzibah Mills of Huntington and they had five children. A short genealogy hand written for Franklin Jonathan Ely, the great- great-grandson of David Ely by his Grandmother, Julia Peirce Ely, in 1932 is attached to the verso of the frame. The diploma bears signatures of Naphtali Daggett, a clergyman who was acting President of Yale in 1767, as well as Thomas Ruggles, Noah Hobart, Moses Dickenson, and Jacob Lockwood (names Latinized on diploma). The Rev. Noah Hobart (1705-1773) of Fairfield, Ct., and Thomas Ruggles, both signed one of Yale's early charters. Item #66137
