San Francisco, CA: Sun Print, [1853]. Broadside. 29 x 23.5 cm. Three columns of text, surrounded by eleven woodcut illustrations by Harrison Eastman, including a central one at the top of the page showing an elephant outside of a miner's shack. Text begins, "A man spake these words and said: I am a miner, who wandered from 'away down east,' and came to sojourn in a strange land and 'see the elephant.'" A tender copy laid down on a backing sheet. A few shallow chips and some loss of lettering at old fold lines, one small brown spot in text. Hamilton 709: "An early broadside of the Gold Rush period...and interesting code for the miner." [Hamilton with a full page illustration].
