Ballou (1771-1852), originally a Baptist, converted to Universalism in 1789, preached in several New England states, published widely, and became known as a father of American Universalism. Inscribed on the front endpaper “D.B. Roberts Esq. / From Yours Cordially / The Author.” Original gilt-stamped elaborately decorated red cloth (somewhat rubbed and soiled, spine ends chipped), a.e.g. Very good, perhaps a publisher’s presentation binding (usually found in plain brown cloth).
