LECTURE! / SCIENTIFIC AND/ PRACTICAL! / Prof. J. S. Ross / Will deliver a Lecture on the subject of Electricity, / [followed by 27 lines describing the lecture and leaving space to write place and time for its delivery].

[United States: 1850]. Printed broadside, 21 x 11 inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, with display types to 2 5/8 inches. During the lecture Ross was to include an “explanation of the telegraphing process … the whole to be accompanied by illustrations on suitable apparatus, including Morse’s telegraph.” A splendid broadside in which Ross declares it is a delusion to believe that only the highly educated can understand the principles of electricity, declaring that “The telegraphing process is the grandest and most successful application of electricity to practical purposes, and the proudest achievements of the age; and the aim of the lecturer will be to thoroughly and clearly explain how a man may be seated in New York, and at the same time Write in New Orleans.” OCLC locates two copies (New York Historical Society, Clements), the imprint above from this source. Glazed and framed. Some foxing, an old light tideline in upper third. Very good. Item #65775
