COMMAND TO SUMMONS, a partially printed document, completed in manuscript, signed by Justice of the Peace John Agnew, 26 January 1776,; instructing the Sheriff of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to summon James Young and Hugh Emison to appear before the Court of Common Pleas at Carlisle in April, to answer a plea from Robert Patterson “that they render to him thirty seven pounds one shilling and six pence lawful money of Pennsylvania,” owed to him.

Also signed by John Armstrong as witness; docketed as verso “Sums. Served” and signed “Rob Temple Shff.” Half-sheet 4to (6 5/8 x 8 ¼ inches). Printed portion of the document headed: “Cumberland Count, ff. / George the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, / France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c / To the Sheriff of Cumberland County, Greeting:” Folded (with a short tear at fold in lower margin).
