Root (1795-1870), a native of New York and a farmer, settled in Galesburg in 1836, traveled to the California gold fields in 1848 (his memoir, “Journal of the Travels,” is an overland rarity), patented a number of inventions, and took up music, producing this treatise and “constructing a keyboard to illustrate the transposition of scale”(Find-a-Grave online).
