Item #65384 AMHERST COLLEGE, MASS. [caption title for a pictorial letter sheet].

AMHERST COLLEGE, MASS. [caption title for a pictorial letter sheet].

Boston, (MA): Pendleton’s Lithog’y, nd [early 1830s]. nd [early 1830s]. Black-and-white illustration, 2 ¼ x 5 ¾ inches, of three of the college’s buildings situated on a hill, fenced-in pastures and a barn to the left, a line of trees in front, and a single path leading up the hill, with two figures en route, situated at the head of the first page of a bi-folium; in the mid-1830s a revised version of this illustration was executed by Pendleton’s, with another college building in place of the barn and a double-path leading up the hill. This example has been used by a student, “Clark,” to pen a 3-page careful explication of the dangers of unguided “miscellaneous reading” (especially novels) and of the importance of the proper course of study and reading to be pursued in a sound, moral education, with a goal of superlative achievement; on the first page, under the illustration, is a manuscript description of the college and its location, noting that a charity fund exists to pay tuition for indigent students “whose object is the Christian ministry” and that expenses include “tuition, room rent, use of Library & Public Rooms, from $42 to $44 per annum,” with board $1.25 to $1.50 per week. Accompanied by a 4-page manuscript (19 cm) of presumably “approved” books, organized by subject matter. Folded (several short separations at folds), one panel browned and a little soiled, but very good. For the two items, Item #65384

Price: $250.00
