A GUIDE TO RAPID AND ACCURATE COMPUTATION, by Professor Hutchings, the Mathematical Phenomenon and Lightning Calculator.

New York: The author, c1860. First edition. 4to. Title-page and (3) pp. Illustrations from wood engravings, a three-quarter length portrait of Hutchings on the title page and a view of P.T. Barnum’s American Museum (3 ½ x 5 inches) heading a full-page ad for the museum on the last page of the circular; accompanied by the circular’s original envelope, with a large embossed blue ad for Barnum’s museum at the left edge, advertising “Professor W. Hutchings, Secret of Rapid and Accurate Computation.” Hutchings (1832-1911) was billed by Barnum as “the boy lightning calculator,” working at the Museum through 1868; his “secret” is printed, with tables, on the two inner pages. OCLC locates one copy with the envelope (Princeton); American Antiquarian Society has a copy of the circular alone, apparently lacking the envelope. Fold lines on the circular, envelope torn at lower corner (not affecting text). Very good. Item #65349
