Bergen County, NJ: 1927. Handbill, 10 x 5 7/8 inches, a program for the celebration of “his record long distance flight to Berlin, Germany,” listing 17 entries, starting at 3:30 in the afternoon, and including a National Biscuit Company Band concert, an escort with Chamberlin, eight addresses by notables including New Jersey Senator W.B. MacKay, the mayor, a stand-in for the governor, further band performances, a reception, etc. A pin-back “Welcome / [portrait] / Chamberlin,” with a small American flag attached is affixed to the program. Chamberlin (1893-1976), an early barnstorming aviator, was the second man to pilot a fixed-wing aircraft across the Atlantic, two weeks after Lindbergh, but he topped Lindbergh’s distance record by three hundred miles, landing in Germany, and carried with him the first trans-Atlantic passenger, his navigator.
