The arrival of the Norfolk-Southern Railroad in 1904 helped stimulate development in the town of Knightdale, a small rural crossroad in Wake County, North Carolina. According to the town's website, many of the homes and businesses in the town were constructed to serve the railroad and families of its employees. The town also grew to accommodate the needs of the farming community. The town was incorporated in 1927. A major fire in the downtown area in 1940 destroyed many of the original structures there.
