MADISON COTTAGE / CORPORAL THOMPSON PROPRIETOR / COR. BROADWAY AND 23rd STREET NEW YORK / N.B. STAGES LEAVES [sic] EVERY 4 MINUTES. [caption title under an image of the cottage].

New York: nd [1850s?]. Lithograph print of Madison Cottage, 31 x 49 cm., with wide margins. Depicts the cottage with its sign above a front entryway and an American flag flying from the roof, gentlemen arriving from a horse-drawn coach, another full of passengers just pulling up. "Corporal" Thompson took over an old farmhouse at what is now 5th Avenue and 23rd Street in 1839 and renamed it "Madison Cottage" after the former president; the house was the last stop for people traveling north out of the city or the first stop for those arriving from the north. It was razed in 1853. OCLC lists a single copy at Columbia Univ. with width of only 41 cm. Slightly foxed on edges, left lower corner crinkled with a few tears. Item #65257
