Cheshire, Con. Shelton & Kensett, Decr. 6th 1813. Line engraving, 23 x 33 cm. , hand-colored in red, blue, and green. Richard M. Johnson (1780-1850), born near present-day Louisville, is reputed to have killed Tecumseh in this battle; he later became Martin Van Buren's Vice-president (1837-1841), the only one to be elected by the Senate under the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment. Stauffer 2638. Shadwell 100: "The victorious charge of Col. Richard M. Johnson's cavalry over British infantry and their Indian allies during the Battle of the Thames is vividly represented in this engraving. An intricate and varied foreground frieze is formed by the bodies of men and horses, weapons and armaments. The vigorous gestures of the Americans brandishing their swords under their star-spangled eagle standard make a striking silhouette and emphasize the strength and determination of the guardians of our frontier. It seems possible that this young provincial engraver was familiar with prints after battle scenes by Raphael." Old vertical fold, repair of tear in upper left corner, border unevenly trimmed, paper browned. Item #65192
