TWO MANUSCRIPT SERMONS ON WISDOM, PREACHED IN SUDBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, JUNE 12, 176[0?], MARCH 28, 1762, AND AGAIN IN 1764.

Hand sewn paper, 16 x 9.5 cm., 24 pp., approx. 8000 words, in a closely written but legible hand. Partly disbound, edges chipped, first page of first sermon is in several pieces (with some loss to text), loss to some lines on other pages, at edges. The first sermon, 14 pp. refers to Proverbs 4:7, "Wisdom is the principal things, therefore get wisdom." The second sermon, referred to in the notes as "No. 56" concerns the need to be "truly wise, truly religious... inasmuch as those who are so have occasion of continual rejoicing." Both sermons finish with the note "Sudbury 28 March 1762." The second sermon adds two more dates, June 12, 176[0?] and 1764. Item #64940

Information provided by a previous catalog entry attributes these two sermons to Rev. Matthew Bridge (1721-1775). A comparison of the handwriting of other sermons by Matthew Bridge, held in the collection at AAS, puts this in doubt. Perhaps the author is Rev. Josiah Bridge (1739-1801), a relative of Matthew's, ordained in November 1761, who was pastor of a church in Sudbury, Massachusetts from 1761-1801.
