DAISY MILLER, A STUDY.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1878. [printed later, an attempted forgery; the first edition requires a title page dated 1879]. With the first issue point of 79 titles listed in the publisher's Half-Hour Series at the front, but this copy issued without a printed date on the title page ("1878" printed in the place that "1879" might have occupied, in an attempt at forgery). With copyright dates of 1877 on the front board and 1878 on verso of title page. 32mo. 116 pp. 4-page list of 79 titles in Harper's Half-Hour Series ahead of the title page (this title not present), 12-page publisher's catalogue at rear. Tipped in at the front endpaper hinge is a fragment of an ALS from James "Very truly yours / H. James" on recto and three lines or parts of lines (10 words or parts of words) in his hand on verso. Edel and Laurence A8: "The first issue may be identified by the listing of only 79 titles in the Harper Half-Hour Series advertisements at the front of the book" (but this copy with a forged date on the title page instead of the required "1879" for a first edition). Very good. Original black and red-stamped green cloth, title on front board and spine (first state of binding with title in black lettering on spine). Housed in a navy quarter-morocco and cloth slipcase, spine richly gilt with title ornaments and rules between raised chemise. (11163) $2,750.00. Item #64903
