Item #64887 POCONO MANOR FISH AND GAME ASSOCIATION, 5-16-1916 [manuscript title on verso of front wrapper].

POCONO MANOR FISH AND GAME ASSOCIATION, 5-16-1916 [manuscript title on verso of front wrapper].

Pocono Manor, PA: 1916. Oblong 8vo (5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches). 45 photographically reproduced cartoons of couples, a few children, and several unaccompanied men, plus two original cartoons mounted to leaves of black paper making up a small album ("Photographs" embossed on front wrapper), each with the name of the person presented and with a caption. They are portrayed a on a fishing and social holiday at Pocono Manor in eastern Pennsylvania; golf and horseback riding were preferred by some; many members of the group lived in the surrounding Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. Each image combines the subject's head, clipped from a photo, combined with a body either drawn or, for the women, clipped from fashion magazines or catalogues. The organizers seem to be Samuel and Ellen Smedley and George and Mary Webster; the two original cartoons are of the Smedleys and demonstrate how the cartoons were fashioned. Samuel L. Smedley (1861-1946) and Ellen Brown Smedley (1864-1933) were residents of Chester County, Pennsylvania. About half of the cartoons involve angling or references to angling. Front wrapper detached, but a fascinating creation, reflecting a group's passion for the outdoors and their interactions with each other. Original black wrappers, tied. (11158). Item #64887
