WE WON'T LET THE PEOPLE VOTE / [cartoon picturing Connor, as Mussolini, seated on the knee of Birmingham, Alabama, mayor Jimmie Jones, as Hitler, the two commenting on the stupidity of “the people,” 7 ¾ x 7 7/8 inches, by Tom Skinner] / The City Commission is robbing the people of their right to vote on the tobacco tax. / [followed by 17 lines further commenting on the issue and the perfidy of Jones and Connor and urging people to attend an upcoming meeting to demand their rights.

[Birmingham, AL]: May, [1939]. Printed broadside, 17 ½ x 11 ½ inches, employing several sizes and styles of type. Jones was mayor of Birmingham, 1925-1940. Connor, overseeing the police and fire departments as Commissioner of Public Safety and a leader of the Democratic party, often used his power to deny civil and political rights to various groups, becoming especially well know for his provocative use of fire hoses and attack dogs against African-American protests in 1963. Here the two were attacked for refusing to call an election for repeal of a municipal tobacco tax after being presented with a petition signed by 5000 citizens; but Jones and Connor were both effective in pursuing their policies until their respective deaths, Jones in 1940, Connor in 1973. Folded (tear into bottom edge, affecting one letters, small corner fold break, not affecting text). Apparently not recorded on OCLC. Very good example of an excellent exhibition broadside.
