Worn with lower front joint starting. Name torn from top of title page not affecting text. Signed by C. F. Smith on page 53 and again at the end of a four page addendum of "alterations and additions" dated May 10, 1837, which has been tipped in between the text and the appendix. Charles Ferguson Smith (1807-1862) served as an instructor and Commandant of Cadets. He served in the Mexican-American War, commanded the Dept. of Utah just before the Civil War and later served under his student Ulysses S. Grant. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 16127. Item #64720
