New York: Published by Kirk & Mercein, No.22 Wall Street, 1817. First edition. 8vo. 6, 371 pp. Frontis. port. & folding table. Original printed boards and paper spine, page fore-edges untrimmed. Some vertical splitting to spine, old glue repairs to spine and front joint, triangular piece torn from blank front flyleaf, ownership signature and ownership label on front pastedown. Colden took great interest in internal improvements and navigation, as is evidenced in his splendid 1825 memoir on the completion of New York canals. He actively supported Fulton's patent rights and the steamboat monopoly. DAB describes this biography as "an uncritical but detailed survey of the inventor's career, which minimizes the contributions of earlier pioneers in the field of steam navigation."
